Climate Bite: Climate Change and food supply

On August 18, 2022 CNN published a report detailing the impact Climate drought is having on Farmers, Growers and Ranchers. One neighbor told me that this year his hay crop is inadequate to feed their own animals when in prior years he sold excess hay. Consider USDA-reported Colorado hay market prices for Forage Quality premium-to-good grades:

– Week of August 17, 2021 - $250-200 per ton

One year later:

– Week of August 23, 2022 - $350-245 per ton

On average each milk cow requires 2.7 tons of hay per year. Wondering why Beef and Milk costs more this summer? It is the changing climate. Who will we blame when fresh vegetables, bread, cereals and meat become expensive in our markets?
