EVs are much simpler
An Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) drive train has over 2,000 moving parts. An Electric Vehicle (EV) drive train has about 20. An EV is much simpler with far less to go wrong, hence maintenance costs are far lower.
The birth of Climate Science
As early as the 1820s, the mathematician Joseph Fourier determined that the earth’s surface temperature is controlled by what we now know as the GreenHouse Effect. By 1938 Guy Callendar showed that global land temperatures were increasing due to higher CO2 levels.
Main GreenHouse Gases
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Methane (CH4) are the main Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emitted from using fossil fuels. Whilst CH4 concentrations are 1/200th that of CO2, it is 80 times more potent a GHG.
US jobs in Renewable Energy
In the US, there are more jobs in Wind electricity generation than in Coal, and nearly five times as many in Solar electricity generation. By 2050, renewable energy jobs are expected to grow to 5 million.
Carbon Fee and Dividend
A carbon fee and dividend scheme will place a fee for carbon emissions for all economic sectors on goods and services, the proceeds of which will be paid to all residents as a dividend.
10 ft of committed sea level rise
We have already committed to about 10 ft rise in sea level within a few hundred years, and this is what the sea level encroachment looks like in the New Orleans area. Image from Climate Central
Most of the GreenHouse Effect happens very close to the surface.
80% of the GreenHouse Effect occurs within the troposphere, just the first 7 miles from the earth’s surface. All pictorial representations of the atmosphere give the impression its much thicker. If the earth was a soccer ball the troposphere would be the thickness of a sheet of writing paper… pretty thin!
8,000 years of stable temperature, until now
The global average temperature of the Earth has been relatively stable for the past 8,000 years, when the human population was just 7.2 million..
Arctic Warming
The Arctic is warming at twice the rate of the global average - an increase of about 2.5 C since the start of the industrial revolution.
