Most of the GreenHouse Effect happens very close to the surface.
Our atmosphere has several layers extending to about 6,200 miles above the surface. But space is practically deemed to start at the Karman line 62 miles up. That’s the height at which meteorites start burning up as they enter our atmosphere… we see them as ‘shooting’ stars’. However, 80% of the gases that influence the GreenHouse Effect are within the troposphere, just the first 5-9 miles from the surface. Long distance airlines fly close to the top of the troposphere. Interestingly, it is the troposphere that is warming due to climate change. The next level up, the stratosphere is actually cooling, as less warmth is leaving the earth’s surface. It’s one of the key fingerprints that tells us that climate change is caused by us humans
